Brewers across Alabama came together to brew a special Guild collaboration this year.

Duffie’s Tavern Strong Ale is now working its way through the distribution system and will soon be available at bars and stores throughout the state.

This is the fourth release in our Capital Series of annual collaborations. With cooperation from the Alabama Bicentennial Commission, these beers are designed to bring attention to Alabama’s 200th year of statehood, and to promote local historical and preservation organizations.

Each year in the Capital Series celebrates one of Alabama’s five historic capitals. This year’s city is Tuscaloosa, which served as the capital from 1826 to 1846.

After meeting with the Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society, the Guild’s Collaboration Committee decided to focus on the Old Tavern, a historic stagecoach inn and political headquarters during Tuscaloosa’s capital days. Originally built in 1827, the Old Tavern was called “Duffie’s Tavern” in its heyday. It is now a museum located near Capitol Park.

The beer is a nod to old English ales of the mid-nineteenth century. Bold and warm with hints of toffee and dried fruits on the nose, and with a classic earthy hop presence throughout. Deep red-orange color with a slightly off white head, rich with malt sweetness and a semi-dry, lingering crisp and bitter finish.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this beer will benefit the Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society.

Duffie’s Tavern Strong Ale would not be possible without our generous sponsors who provided services, products, and expertise to help us develop a great beer with authentic flavors.
