With cooperation from the Alabama Bicentennial Commission, the Alabama Brewers Guild is celebrating the state’s 200th birthday with a Capital Series of annual collaboration beers. These beers recognize each of the state’s five historic capitals with the last of the series to be released in conjunction with Alabama’s bicentennial in 2019. For 2017 we are releasing Mulberry Road to honor our first permanent capital at Old Cahawba (1820-1826).

The series started in 2015 with the release of St. Stephens Stout, paying homage to the territorial capital of Alabama.

For 2016, we brewed Badlun Brothers Imperial Porter, a modern take on a traditional porter recipe. This beer was developed and named in recognition of James and William Badlun, owners of the first brewery in Alabama. The brewery was started in Huntsville during the year it served as the temporary capital and Alabama was admitted as the 22nd state.

For 2017, we brewed a Belgian-style Dubbel, Mulberry Road, inspired by the stately mulberry trees lining the streets of the scenic capital that was Old Cahawba. The natural sweetness of the mulberry is a perfect match for the rich and malty complexity of the Belgian-style Dubbel and keeps the focus on the fruit. Mulberry Road will be produced at Cahaba Brewing with brewers from across the state lending their hand in crafting the beer.

Statewide release for Mulberry Road is planned for January 2017. Many member breweries will also be developing and brewing their own beer styles based on the mulberry for release in their tap rooms. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Cahawba Advisory Committee for preserving the Old Cahawba historical site.
