Breweries are tourism boosters, serving as both primary destinations and as unique local spots for visitors. Unfortunately, out-of-state travelers are often given a shock when they visit an Alabama brewery as it is one of only two states with a total prohibition on to-go sales.

There is a brewery experience that tourists anticipate when visiting a new craft beer maker. This experience often includes a tour of the facility, samples of the different beers, and the purchase of their favorite sample to take home to their place of origin.

Alabama’s brewers would love for our guests to be able to take a unique piece of Alabama home with them to enjoy with friends and family. Unfortunately, it’s illegal.

The table below lists the 50 states and the District of Columbia, and whether it is legal to sell beer to-go from the brewery. A few states such as Mississippi and Oklahoma are fairly restrictive, but they all have some provision for these direct sales except Alabama and Georgia.
